UNFPA Representative in Turkmenistan: "The total fertility rate in the country is 2.8 children per woman"

As previously reported, an event marking World Population Day was held in Ashgabat, during which the representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Turkmenistan presented the results of the seventh round of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS7) for 2024.

According to the data presented, the country's total fertility rate in 2024 was 2.8 children per woman—standing at 2,6 in urban areas and 3,0 in rural areas. Regionally, the situation has evolved unevenly over the past five years: while Lebap velayat led in fertility in 2019 (with a rate of 3,6), the figure had dropped to 2,9 by 2024. The highest figure in 2024 was recorded in Arkadag (3,5), followed by Ahal velayat, where the rate rose slightly—from 3,0 to 3,1. In contrast, the figure increased in Ashgabat and Mary velayat, reaching 2,8, up from 2,7 and 2,5 respectively in 2019. In Dashoguz velayat, the birth rate fell from 3,1 to 2,7, while in Balkan velayat, it dropped from 2.4 to 2.3.

The presentation also highlighted positive trends in reproductive health. The proportion of women aged 15–49 who make independent decisions regarding their reproductive health, contraception, and access to medical services rose from 42,2% in 2019 (according to MICS6 data) to 62,1% in 2024. Prenatal care coverage also expanded: the proportion of women receiving at least eight prenatal care visits reached 62,6%.

The UNFPA representative highlighted progress in expanding the reach of family planning services and outlined strategic directions for future work: developing reproductive health services for young people, implementing digital solutions for monitoring prenatal care, and expanding access to medical care in remote rural communities, including through mobile maternal health teams.
