Keiko Fujimori wins Peru's presidential election

According to preliminary data from Peru's National Electoral Authority, Keiko Fujimori, candidate of the right-wing “Popular Force” party, has won the second round of the presidential elections.

With 99,86% of the votes counted, Fujimori received 50,12% of the votes, compared to 49,88% for her opponent, Roberto Sánchez, leader of the leftist party Together for Peru. The gap between the candidates is more than 43 000 votes. The approximately 39 300 ballots remaining to be counted are not enough to change the outcome.

Keiko Fujimori is the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, who ruled from 1990 to 2000. Her current victory marks her fourth attempt at the presidency: she previously made it to the second round three times, but lost to her opponents each time.

The politician's key election promises include involving military intelligence and army units in the fight against organized crime, as well as temporarily transferring control of the penitentiary system to the military until prison reform is completed. In the economic sphere, Fujimori intends to focus on developing the mining, manufacturing, and energy sectors, stimulating employment, and supporting entrepreneurship. In foreign policy, the newly elected president is focusing on deepening relations with the United States and right-wing governments in the region.

Fujimori will become Peru's ninth president, following a string of successive terms since July 2016 amid a protracted political crisis marked by numerous impeachments and early resignations of heads of state. His inauguration is scheduled for July 28.
