Completion of the mountainous section of the Afghan segment of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline is scheduled for December 2026. This was announced by Turkmenistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vepa Hajiyev, at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Afghanistan.
According to him, as of June 2026, approximately 130 km of pipeline had been laid in the country's rugged mountainous region, of which approximately 40 km had already been commissioned.
Hajiyev also reported that work is simultaneously underway to extend the railway from Akina to Andkhoy in the direction of Shibergan, and the construction of the railway terminal in Turgundi is planned to be completed in December of this year.
The diplomat emphasized that Turkmenistan views infrastructure projects as a key tool for stabilizing Afghanistan. "Progressive economic development, job creation, and access to energy and transportation are prerequisites for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan," he said.
The Turkmen representative called on the international community to focus on practical and effective approaches to the Afghan settlement that will bring tangible benefits to the country's population.
