Florentino Pérez was re-elected president of Spanish football club “Real Madrid”. The vote took place on Sunday, June 7, at the “Valdebebas” sports complex in Madrid.
Current president Florentino Pérez and businessman Enrique Riquelme were both contenders for the club's presidency. According to exit polls, Pérez was in the clear lead, garnering approximately 65,95% of the vote.
This is Pérez's first real challenge since his return in 2009 – he was re-elected unopposed in 2013, 2017, 2021, and 2025. Pérez announced the snap elections after a difficult season: Real Madrid went without a major trophy for the second year in a row.
In the 2025/26 season, “Real” finished second in the La Liga standings with 86 points, reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they lost to “Bayern”, and also lost to “Barcelona” in the final of the Spanish Super Cup.
The 79-year-old entrepreneur served as president of “Real” from 2000 to 2006, and then continuously since 2009. Under his leadership, the Madrid team won the Spanish championship seven times and the Champions League seven times.
If he wins, Perez has stated his intention to appoint José Mourinho as the club's head coach and also to acquire a new player for at least 150 million euros.
