A training course on rehabilitation for children with spinal muscular atrophy was held in Ashgabat

From April 27 to May 2, the Ashgabat International Rehabilitation Center held a training course on the basics of physical rehabilitation for patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The event was organized with the support of UNICEF within the framework of its efforts to develop inclusive services for children with disabilities, as well as the Representative Office of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. in Turkmenistan.

The training was attended by specialists from the country's leading medical institutions—the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Children's Rehabilitation Center in Arkadag, the International Rehabilitation Center, the Scientific and Clinical Center for Maternal and Child Health, as well as physicians from the regions. The program included a scientific and practical conference bringing together over 100 participants, including representatives of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, neurologists, and rehabilitation specialists.

Spinal muscular atrophy is a rare genetic disorder that affects motor neurons and leads to progressive muscle weakness. However, patients retain their intelligence and sensitivity, making early diagnosis and proper care key to improving their quality of life.

The course included both theoretical and practical components. Children with SMA and their parents were hospitalized at a rehabilitation center, allowing specialists to practice physical rehabilitation techniques with their families. Particular attention was paid to home rehabilitation methods, the use of assistive technology, and postural correction to support the respiratory and nervous systems.

Following the course, an individual physical rehabilitation plan was developed for each child. Participants also outlined steps for implementing the acquired methods into Turkmenistan's healthcare system.
