Turkmenistan's tennis players have reached the final qualification of the Junior Davis Cup for the first time

For the first time in history, Turkmen tennis players have earned the right to compete in the Junior Davis Cup U16 final qualifying round. The tournament will be held from May 16 to 24 in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, with 16 of the strongest teams from the Asian region participating. This was announced by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), according to the online newspaper "Golden Age."

The Turkmenistan team received an invitation to participate in the final stage of the selection process following its performance in the preliminary round of qualification, which took place in March in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Fifteen teams participated in the tournament.

The sixth-seeded Turkmenistan team was represented by Suleiman Khudaiberdyev (a 9th-grade student at Ashgabat Specialized Secondary School No. 86), Ali Geldiyev (a 9th-grade student at the Young Olympians Training School), and Kerimgeldi Guldurdyev (a 9th-grade student at the A.S. Pushkin Joint Turkmen-Russian Secondary School). The team captain was 31-year-old Gurbanberdy Gurbanberdyev, a coach and teacher at the Higher School of Sports Mastery of Turkmenistan and bronze medalist at the 2024 Turkmenistan Cup.

In the group stage, the Turkmen tennis team took first place in Group B, defeating Oman 3-0 and coming from behind to defeat Myanmar and Singapore (the second seed) by identical scores of 2-1. In the quarterfinals, the Turkmen juniors defeated the fifth-seeded Philippines 2-0, advancing to the tournament's top four for the first time.

Teams from Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong (PRC), India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Korea, Pakistan, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Turkmenistan will compete for four spots in the main tournament at the U16 Davis Cup Asian Final Qualifiers in Shymkent.

The Junior Davis Cup Finals will be held from August 3rd to 8th in Prostějov, Czech Republic. Sixteen top teams from all continents will compete for the championship title: six from Europe, four from Asia, and two each from North America, South America, and Africa.

The Junior Davis Cup was established by the International Tennis Federation in 1985 as the Junior World Cup for boys under 16. In 2002, the tournament received its current name.
