The Iraqi Council of Representatives voted to elect Nizar Amidi as the new president of the republic, the Iraqi news agency INA reported.
Two hundred and twenty-seven members of parliament voted for his candidacy, representing the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. The second candidate, Muthanna Nadir, received 15 votes, and seven ballots were invalidated. Incumbent President Abdel Latif Rashid had previously withdrawn from the race.
Amidi, 57, has many years of experience in public administration: from 2022 to 2024, he served as Iraq's Minister of Environment, and before that, he spent more than 15 years in the presidential administration, including as a senior adviser and head of the presidential office.
