The US State Department says it is investigating an incident in which an unknown assailant used artificial intelligence technology to impersonate Secretary of State Marco Rubio and contact three foreign ministers.
According to a State Department cable obtained by the BBC's U.S. affiliate CBS News, an "unknown actor" allegedly used Rubio's artificially created voice to communicate with officials via the messaging app Signal.
The cable says the scammer contacted at least five people, including foreign ministers, a U.S. governor and a member of Congress.
State Department officials confirmed they were aware of the incident and were taking steps to strengthen their cyber defenses.
