The northern regions of Myanmar, still recovering from the recent devastating earthquake, are facing a new natural disaster – severe flooding, reports “MIR 24” correspondent Igor Mosunov.
In Mandalay, the second largest city in the country, streets were under water. Buildings that survived the tremors are now unable to withstand the onslaught of the water. Eyewitnesses filmed a local resident with a motor scooter almost being swept away by a powerful stream right in the middle of the road.
Torrential rains accompanied by hail hit this region of Southeast Asia just as the population was beginning to recover from a catastrophic earthquake.
Let us remind that on March 28, Myanmar was shaken by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7,7, which was felt even in neighboring countries - Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Laos and China. More than 3,5 thousand people became victims of the disaster, and this figure continues to grow, since rescuers are still finding the bodies of missing people. The number of injured is approaching five thousand.
Teams from around the world, including employees of the Russian and Belarusian Emergencies Ministry, took part in the rescue operation.
Thousands of people who have lost their homes are now forced to seek shelter from the incessant rains. According to meteorologists, the downpours in the region will continue for at least another day.
