Humanity may soon face a serious problem — the lack of effective means against fungal infections due to the development of their resistance to existing drugs and limited diagnostic capabilities. This alarming information is contained in two new reports of the World Health Organization (WHO) devoted to the problem of mycoses, writes gazeta.ru.
According to experts, fungal infections are especially dangerous for people with poor health. The situation is aggravated by the development of resistance of pathogens to medications in combination with the reduced immunity of seriously ill patients. The WHO considers the most dangerous pathogens from the “critical priority group” – cryptococci, aspergilli and candida, when infected with which the mortality rate can reach 88%.
