Washington's Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin has come close to Wayne Gretzky's legendary record by scoring a goal in the match against San Jose. Ovechkin now has 887 goals in the NHL regular championships, and he only needs to score seven goals to break the Canadian forward's historic achievement (894 goals).
The Washington-San Jose game ended with a confident 5-1 victory for the capital club. Ovechkin scored in the 51st minute of the game, and had previously made an assist in the episode with the team's first goal. Dylan Strome, Alexei Protas, Taylor Reddish and Trevor van Riemsdyk also scored for Washington. MacLean Celebrini scored the only goal for San Jose.
