Global changes in the rotation speed of our planet will require the removal of one second from the world time system. This was reported to RIA Novosti by Sergei Donchenko, General Director of VNIIFTRI (All-Russian Research Institute of Physical, Technical and Radiotechnical Measurements).
The unusual acceleration of the Earth’s rotation observed in recent years will lead to the need for a time adjustment by 2029. Donchenko emphasizes that the procedure for removing a second is not technically difficult for modern specialists.
It Is interesting to note that the rotation speed of our planet is not a constant value – it goes through cycles of deceleration and acceleration. At the moment, we are in the acceleration phase. Among the possible causes of this phenomenon, scientists are considering global warming, melting glaciers and changes in the distribution of water masses.
Donchenko also notes that the current changes may be associated with the intensification of intraplanetary processes and an increase in the Earth’s temperature. At the same time, he emphasizes that these processes are not necessarily associated with anthropogenic impact and are unlikely to indicate the approach of serious cataclysms.
