In the implementation of the foreign policy strategy of neutral Turkmenistan, special importance is attached to traditional cooperation with neighboring states, among which is Afghanistan.

As the State News Agency of Turkmenistan reports, a new impetus to bilateral cooperation was given by the exhibition of Afghan goods and the Turkmen-Afghan business forum held in Ashgabat in March 2024.

Making an effective contribution to the peaceful socio-economic recovery of Afghanistan, Turkmenistan initiates large infrastructure projects, the implementation of which is also designed to contribute to the sustainable development of the entire region and its successful integration into the modern system of world economic relations.

So, on August 30 last year, a meeting of the Turkmen and Afghan delegations was held in Ashgabat, dedicated to key issues and prospects for the development of bilateral cooperation. As a result of the negotiations, documents were signed aimed at implementing joint projects in the fields of energy and transport.

A visible symbol of friendly, good-neighborly Turkmen-Afghan relations are:

opening on the Turkmen-Afghan border of a 177-meter railway bridge on the Serhetabat-Turgundi steel main line;
laying the foundation of the gas compressor station “Şatlyk-1” in Mary velayat;
the beginning of construction of the Serhetabat-Herat section, which is an important stage in the implementation of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) transnational gas pipeline project, and the Serhetabat-Herat fiber-optic communication line, called “Arkadagyň ak ýoly”;
start of work on the construction of a warehouse complex in the dry port of the Turgundi railway station and the Turgundi-Sanabar section of the first stage of the Turgundi-Herat railway;
commissioning of the "Nur-el-Jahad" power plant located in the Afghan province of Herat as part of the implementation of the first stage of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) power transmission line project.
