NASA satellites recorded in their images the “ghost” island of Chigil Deniz, located near the eastern coast of Azerbaijan. This unusual island, formed two years earlier, is now visible only from Earth’s orbit, "MIR 24" reports with reference to Vice.

The island appeared in early 2023 after the activity of the Cumani mud volcano. By the end of 2024, the water element had almost completely absorbed the newly formed land area, which is clearly visible in satellite images.

First recorded in 1861, Cumani Volcano is known for its ability to create temporary islands. The most powerful eruption occurred in 1950, when an island 700 meters wide and 6 meters high was formed.

The researchers emphasize that monitoring Chigil-Deniz helps to better understand the geological processes of the Caspian Sea and their impact on the local ecosystem.
