Indonesia has become a new full member of the BRICS community. This was officially announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, which assumed the post of chairman of the bloc on January 1 of this year, TASS reports.
As emphasized in the official statement of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, Indonesia's candidacy received unanimous approval from the leaders of the BRICS countries at the August 2023 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Brazilian side particularly noted the importance of Indonesia's accession as the largest economy and the most populous state in the region, sharing the desire of the association's participants to reform the global governance system and strengthen cooperation between the countries of the global South.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that from 2025, eight more countries will receive the status of BRICS partner countries: Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
