On December 25, an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane crashed in the city of Aktau (Kazakhstan), en route from Baku to Grozny, tengrinews.kz reports.

According to preliminary information, there were 67 people on board. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 25 passengers managed to survive. Among the passengers were citizens of several countries: 37 people from Azerbaijan, 16 from Russia, 6 from Kazakhstan and 3 from Kyrgyzstan.

According to the press service of Grozny Airport, the plane was initially forced to change its route due to thick fog at its destination. The aircraft was first sent to Makhachkala and then to Aktau. The immediate cause of the disaster could have been a collision between the plane and a flock of birds.

Footage from the scene shows the plane breaking into pieces. The resulting fire was quickly extinguished by rescue services.

Rescuers and investigative agencies are currently working at the scene of the disaster.
