After a series of impressive victories, Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka officially topped the WTA world rankings for 2024. This became possible after the defeat of Polish athlete Iga Swiatek to American Coco Gauff at the tournament in Riyadh, where Sabalenka herself successfully played two matches, reports daily.afisha.ru.
The path to the top of the ranking was not easy for the 26-year-old athlete. Having overcome a serious injury to the large round muscle, due to which she had to miss Wimbledon, Sabalenka demonstrated exceptional fortitude and impressive statistics: 22 wins in the last 23 matches. She has victories at the US Open and the prestigious tournament in Wuhan.
“Looking back, I understand that for me it was an important moment – just to relax, recharge my batteries. To recover well, make sure my shoulder healed so that I could come back stronger. “After a little break, I was really, really hungry for tennis. I think that helped me get to where I am today,” said the tennis player, who now has three singles and two doubles Grand Slam titles to her credit.
