A powerful tropical storm “Trami” hit the northwestern part of the Philippines, causing widespread destruction and casualties. According to the latest data, the natural disaster caused the death of 82 people, daily.afisha.ru reports with reference to the Associated Press.

The elements, accompanied by hurricane winds with speeds of up to 95 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 115 km / h, caused catastrophic floods and landslides. As a result of the disaster, more than 2.6 million residents were in the affected area. About 320 thousand people were forced to seek shelter in evacuation centers or with relatives.

The situation is especially difficult in the province of Batangas, where 17 people are listed as missing. Another 10 people disappeared in other regions of the country. Many locals fled from the rapidly rising water on the roofs of their houses.

Due to the emergency situation in the country, the work of schools and government agencies has been suspended, inter-island ferry service has been stopped. Meteorologists have warned of a possible return of the storm to the Philippines, despite the fact that it is currently moving towards Vietnam.

Trami was the latest in a series of destructive storms that have hit the Philippines this year. The archipelago is hit by about 20 storms and typhoons every year. The most destructive in the last decade was Tropical Cyclone Haiyan in 2013, which killed more than 7 300 people.

It Is worth noting that neighboring Vietnam also suffers from similar natural phenomena. In September, Typhoon Yagi devastated the country, killing 323 people and causing economic damage amounting to $3.3 billion USD.
