A note on Turkmenistan’s accession to the Global Alliance to End Statelessness, created under the auspices of UNHCR, was submitted to UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.
The note was handed over on October 16 during a meeting in Geneva between the Chairman of the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan Amanmuhammet Sazakov and Filippo Grandi, the website of the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Geneva reports.
During the talks, the parties discussed key areas of cooperation related to solving the problems of statelessness.
Amanmuhammet Sazakov emphasized that the leadership of Turkmenistan has done significant work in this direction. In particular, in September, Turkmenistan granted citizenship to more than 1000 stateless persons, thereby fully fulfilling its obligations under the UN #IBelong campaign - a ten-year program aimed at eradicating statelessness worldwide. Thus, Turkmenistan became one of the first countries to successfully achieve the program's goals, confirming its commitment to humanitarian obligations.
Filippo Grandi praised Turkmenistan's intention to join the Global Alliance to End Statelessness, noting the country's leading role in global initiatives aimed at solving one of the most significant humanitarian problems of our time.
He expressed deep gratitude to the leadership of Turkmenistan.
