The American airline Spirit Airlines has tightened its requirements for the appearance of passengers, daily.afisha.ru reports with reference to the Daily Mail. The carrier now insists on modest clothing that completely covers the body.

The new rules came Into force after an incident with two passengers who were denied boarding because of crop tops. Despite the flight attendant’s request to cover up, the girls did not comply.

Spirit Airlines representatives claim that the actions of the crew member were lawful. The 60-page carriage agreement that passengers sign when purchasing tickets contains a clause on the need to look decent on board. The document states that “inadequate clothing” may result in denied boarding.

The affected passengers insist that their attire – white crop tops that partially expose the stomach – was quite ordinary. According to them, the airline’s customer service previously confirmed that such clothing is acceptable on board.

The girls put sweaters over their tops when boarding, but took them off because of the heat in the cabin. Even when they agreed to put their outerwear back on, they were still kicked off the plane.

“We’ve never experienced anything like this before and didn’t know how to react,” one passenger shared. They had to spend an extra thousand dollars on new tickets, and Spirit Airlines did not refund the cost of their tickets.

The Incident also affected a third passenger who stood up for the girls. She was also kicked off the flight along with her small child when she showed off her crop top under her sweater in a show of solidarity.
