Sammy Basso, the longest-living patient with progeria, passed away at the age of 28, MIR 24 reports, citing L’Unione Sarda.
Despite the difficult diagnosis he received in early childhood, Sammy was able to achieve incredible heights: he received a master’s degree, wrote a book, and founded an association designed to improve the lives of people with progeria.
Progeria is a rare genetic disease that causes the body to age at an incredible rate. People suffering from progeria are forced to face the physical changes typical of old age at a young age. Cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, and oncology are just some of the many problems they face. Unfortunately, the life expectancy of patients with progeria is extremely limited and ranges from 7 to 28 years.
