According to the forecast of the Indian Ministry of Statistics, by 2036 the country's population will reach 1,522 billion people, TASS reports.

A change in the demographic structure is expected: the proportion of elderly people over 60 years of age will increase, and the number of children under 15 will decrease due to a decrease in the birth rate. The proportion of women is predicted to increase to 48,8%, which will improve the gender balance - there will be 952 women per 1000 men (in 2011 this figure was 943).

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) expects India to retain its status as the world's most populous country throughout the XXI century, surpassing China.

India's population is currently estimated at 1,442 billion, already exceeding China's population (1,425 billion). UNFPA attributes India's population growth to improved socio-economic conditions and a decline in maternal mortality.

Today, 26% of India's population is aged 10-24. Life expectancy for boys born in 2023 is 71 years, for girls - 74 years.
