A group of scientists from the UK conducted a study that revealed the multifaceted benefits of skateboarding for girls and young women. The results of the work were published in the journal International Review for the Sociology of Sport, writes gazeta.ru.
Researchers from Nottingham Trent University surveyed 48 female skateboarders ranging in age from 8 to 27 years old and of varying skill levels. The participants spoke about the impact of this hobby on their psychological state and general well-being.
The conversations covered a variety of aspects including feelings of freedom, joy of riding, focus, mental health benefits, social engagement and body image.
Respondents noted that skateboarding brings them pleasure and excitement, gives them an adrenaline rush and a sense of physical freedom when mastering new tricks. This type of activity also helps improve coordination, focus and get rid of obsessive thoughts, providing peace of mind.
Despite the stereotypical perception of skateboarding as a risky and male-dominated activity, researchers have found that it can significantly improve the physical and mental well-being of young women and girls.
