According to the results of the World Emoji Awards competition held by Emojipedia, the “melting face” emoji was recognized as the symbol of 2024, reports daily.afisha.ru.
The winner was selected using a playoff system. In the semi-finals, the “melting face” beat out the “saluting” emoji, and in the final round it defeated the “face holding back tears.”
To determine the leader, Emojipedia organized a poll on the social network X. Participants were asked to choose not the most popular emoticon, but the one that most accurately characterizes the year 2024 without using words.
The glitter emoji (✨) received a special Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is given to emoji that continue to be popular. Since 2015, “Glitter” has consistently been one of the ten most used emojis in the world.
Among the new emoji, the leader was “a face shaking its head horizontally.” Second place went to “a face shaking its head vertically,” and the top three was completed by “Phoenix bird.”
