Turkmenistan has joined the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). This happened after the country’s Mejlis approved the corresponding bill, reports the State News Agency of Turkmenistan.

CITES is an international agreement that came into force in 1975. It aims to regulate and control international trade in endangered wild animals and plants. The convention covers more than 38 000 species, including iconic ones such as elephants, tigers and lions.

Joining CITES demonstrates Turkmenistan's commitment to preserving its natural heritage and ensuring the sustainable use of biological resources.
