On July 4, Belarus will become a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Russian Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov announced this at a briefing, as quoted by TASS.

According to Ushakov, at the upcoming meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO, the results of Belarus’ work on joining the organization will be summed up. Minsk will be granted the status of a full member of the SCO.

It is expected that President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko will be able to take part in this meeting.

Ushakov emphasized that Belarus’s accession to the SCO is a significant political event. The country has been participating in the work of the organization since 2009 and is actively demonstrating its readiness to contribute to its activities. Russia has always supported the participation of its ally in the SCO and welcomes its full membership.

Belarus will become the tenth member of the SCO. Earlier, the special representative of the Russian President for SCO affairs, Bakhtiyor Khakimov, reported that the expansion of the organization would be one of the main topics of the upcoming summit in July.
