Google has significantly updated its online translator, adding support for 110 new languages. This is the largest expansion of the service’s functionality in its entire history, almost doubling the number of languages available for translation, reports daily.afisha.ru.

Among the new languages are several common in Russia, including Avar, Bashkir, Buryat, Chechen, Chuvash, Ossetian, Udmurt, Tuvan, Yakut, Komi and Meadow-Mari.

Particular attention is paid to African languages, which make up about a quarter of the total number of new additions. Google notes that about 614 million people use new languages, which is 8% of the world's population.

This major update was made possible by the use of the advanced language model PaLM 2. The model has proven particularly effective when working with related languages such as Awadhi and Marwadi (close to Hindi), as well as French creole languages, including Seychellois and Mauritian Creole.

Going forward, Google plans to develop an AI model capable of supporting one thousand of the world's most common languages, continuing to expand the capabilities of its translator.
