The higher education system in Russia is undergoing significant changes: from 2025, the concept of “bachelor” will disappear in the country. Instead, there will be two levels: basic higher education and specialized higher education, TASS writes, citing the speech of the candidate for the post of head of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Valery Falkov at a plenary meeting of the State Duma.

The new education system is designed to make students' opportunities more flexible and relevant to modern realities.

Basic higher education will last from 4 to 6 years, depending on the specialty. Specialized higher education (analogous to a master's degree) will become available only to those who already have a basic higher education. Master's programs in the new system will remain the same, but will undergo significant changes.

As Falkov noted, such a system will allow students to decide for themselves whether they need to continue their studies after receiving a basic diploma. He also emphasized that for some professions, such as engineers, doctors, teachers, a four-year education is not enough.

The new system will allow such specialists to gain deeper knowledge and skills necessary to work in their fields.

It should be noted:

• Bachelor's degrees issued before 2025 will be valid.
• The transition to the new education system will take place gradually.
