A High-Level Meeting on Cooperation in the Field of Sustainable Transport, initiated by Turkmenistan, was held in the UN General Assembly Hall in New York. The event was held as part of the Sustainable Development Week, reports the press service of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.
The meeting was attended by heads of international organizations, ministers of transport from different countries, and heads of diplomatic missions. Participants highly appreciated the role of Turkmenistan in promoting the global transport agenda.
The importance of joint coordinated actions to ensure affordable and environmentally friendly transport throughout the world was noted, which should be the goal of the developed plan for the implementation of the UN Decade on Sustainable Transport for 2026-2035.
The UN General Assembly resolutions previously adopted at the initiative of Turkmenistan and the final documents of the Global Conferences in Ashgabat (2016) and Beijing (2021) served as the basis for international cooperation in this area. Participants emphasized the need to strengthen multi-stakeholder dialogue to develop strategies for achieving transport sustainability.
During the meeting, issues of attracting investment in the industry, developing multimodal systems and transport corridors, introducing “green” technologies, and increasing the accessibility of public transport were also touched upon. Based on the results of the event, a summarized report with recommendations will be prepared.
