The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan hosted a regular meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission to ensure the implementation of Turkmenistan’s international obligations in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law, reports the press service of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.

Participants reviewed the results of the work for the first quarter of 2024 and discussed further steps to implement national action plans in the field of human rights, gender equality and protection of children's rights.

The Commission pays special attention to establishing active cooperation with UN structures and other international organizations to fulfill Turkmenistan’s international obligations. In this regard, the possibilities of increasing interaction with the International Labor Organization (ILO), joining international documents and the draft “Road Map” for joint work with the ILO for 2024–2025 were discussed.

Members of the Commission noted the importance of modernizing national legislation taking into account international law. Particular emphasis was placed on the implementation of the recommendations of the UN Human Rights Committee and strengthening the capacity of the Authorized Representative for Human Rights in Turkmenistan - the Ombudsman. It is planned to open new areas within its structure to protect the rights of children, women and entrepreneurs.

The Commission regularly holds conferences and consultations with international experts to explore best practices in the field of human rights. Much attention is paid to increasing the legal knowledge of the population and the accessibility of legal information.
