On Friday, April 5, an earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred near New York. This was the most powerful seismic event in the region over the past 100 years, reports daily.afisha.ru with reference to CBS.

State Governor Kathy Hochul called the earthquake the most powerful for the east coast of the United States. The epicenter of the tremors, according to the US Geological Survey, was 46 km northwest of the city of Edison in New Jersey, at a depth of 4.7 km.

The tremors were felt by residents of New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston and other cities. Seismic activity interrupted a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York.

For safety reasons, operations at New York and New Jersey International Airports have been temporarily suspended. City officials are not predicting any major aftershocks.

At the moment there is no information about casualties or significant damage. New Yorkers are urged to be vigilant and stay home if possible.
