The Hungarian Parliament has voted for Tamás Szújok, President of the Constitutional Court, as the country's new president. TASS reports this.

134 deputies supported his candidacy, 5 were against it, and the rest were not present.

According to the constitution, Szújok must take the oath of office and take office within eight days. Until this moment, the duties of the President will be performed by the Speaker of Parliament, László Kövér.

The role of the President of Hungary is to unite the nation, but his actual powers are limited (signing laws, appointing judges, setting the date of elections, etc.). Hungary is a parliamentary republic where the main power lies with the prime minister and the government.
