In the UK, Winston Churchill's false jaw, in which he made the famous speech “We will fight on the beaches” during World War II, was put up for auction, daily.afisha.ru reports, citing The Guardian.
The gold-framed prosthesis is estimated to cost between £5 000 and £8 000, but experts expect the price to be higher. In 2010, this artifact was sold for 15.2 thousand pounds.
"Churchill's teeth are perhaps the most unusual item we have ever offered for sale," said Liz Poole, director of The Cotswold Auction.
Churchill began wearing false teeth as a young man to correct a speech impediment he developed as a child. It is believed that he used four sets of prosthetics, one of which was buried with him.
Another set is in the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons in London. There it was called “the most important physical and psychological tool” for Churchill.
“It enabled him to speak effectively—a vital attribute for any politician, and especially for one whose oratory skills were so important to his success. Throughout his adult life, Churchill was haunted by the fear of losing his ability to speak,” the museum said in a statement.
The microphone with which he announced victory over Germany in 1945 will also be auctioned along with Churchill's jaw. This lot is also estimated at 5-8 thousand pounds.
