The city of Legrad, located in northern Croatia, has decided to take drastic measures to stop the outflow of residents. The city administration has begun selling empty houses at a symbolic price of 13 euro cents, reports euro-pulse.ru.
Candidate buyers must meet the following conditions: be under 45 years of age, married, have no criminal record and do not own any other real estate. Couples with children have an advantage over other applicants. Croatian citizenship is not required.
The small town of Legrad is located in a picturesque area on the border with Hungary. Now only about 2 000 people live here, which is half as many as 70 years ago.
The city began selling the first houses for 13 euro cents in 2018. Since then, thanks to the new residents, Legrad has already acquired everything necessary for life: a school, a pharmacy, a family doctor, a dentist and new shops.
The program for selling houses at a ridiculous price has already shown its effectiveness. In Italy there is a similar program called “House for 1 Euro”. The French city of Saint-Amand-Monrond also used a similar approach to find residents for empty houses.
