The Elephant Trunk Rock, located on the northeast coast of Taiwan, collapsed into the sea. The unique natural formation, 100 meters high, was popular among tourists, but since 2010 it has been cordoned off due to the threat of collapse.
The main reason for the destruction of the rock is considered to be rock erosion caused by the influence of sea water and wind. The thin arched shape of the stone also contributed to its instability.
Elephant Trunk Rock was located on a narrow strip of land called Shenao, about 10 kilometers from the popular tourist area of Jiufen. It got its name for its amazing resemblance to an elephant's trunk.
