Jonathan, the giant tortoise who lives on St. Helena Island, celebrated his 191st birthday. This makes it the oldest known animal in the world. This is reported by pravilamag.ru with reference to the website of the Guinness World Records.
Jonathan's exact age is unknown, but he is believed to have been born around 1832. The tortoise has survived the reigns of eight British monarchs, 40 US presidents and 26 “Manchester United” managers.
“Despite the loss of his sense of smell and the fact that he (Jonathan) is practically blind due to cataracts, his appetite remains excellent”, - says a representative from the Guinness World Records.
Veterinarians believe Jonathan may live many more years. They hope he lives to see his third century.
