The Peruvian authorities have decided to close part of the ancient city of the Inca Empire, Machu Picchu, from visiting tourists, writes The International News portal.
The reason for the closure is said to be erosion in the walls of ancient buildings and wear and tear of the trail leading to Machu Picchu. The ancient Inca city, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, is extremely popular among tourists from all over the world.
To preserve the unique historical monument, since 2011 it was even necessary to limit the number of visitors. No more than 2500 people a year can visit the site and no more than 400 can climb Mount Huayna Picchu, which is part of the archaeological complex.
But now the Peruvian authorities do not rule out that some parts of Machu Picchu will be completely closed from tourists.
According to archaeologists, the damage caused by tourists to the ancient monument is irreversible.
