Researchers from the Ritsumeikan Asia-Pacific University in Japan report that resistance training can have a rejuvenating effect on the skin, writes Scientific Reports.
The conclusions were made on the basis of observations of the condition of the skin in 56 healthy middle-aged Japanese women who had not been involved in sports before. Participants in the experiment for four weeks trained twice a week using strength exercises.
Weight training not only improves the elasticity of the skin and the structure of the upper layers of the dermis, but also increases the thickness of the skin itself. Scientists attributed this effect to the increased activity of genes responsible for the production of proteoglycans, which help maintain skin elasticity. In addition, a positive effect, according to scientists, had an increase in blood circulation in the skin due to physical exertion.
