Turkmenistan invites the UN to adopt the Treaty on a zone free from the death penalty in Central Asia and Mongolia

The international legal document - "Treaty on a zone free from the death penalty in Central Asia and Mongolia" proposes to consider Turkmenistan at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, which will open on September 12 in New York. This is stated in the Priority Positions of Turkmenistan, published today on the website of the Foreign Ministry.

The document notes that Turkmenistan became the first state in Central Asia to abolish the death penalty and currently the countries of Central Asia and Mongolia have the potential to become the first region free from the death penalty.

“Based on the foregoing, Turkmenistan proposes to consider the development and adoption of an international legal document for the Central Asian region and Mongolia “Agreement on a zone free from the death penalty in Central Asia and Mongolia”. In the future, such a document can lay the foundation for the development and adoption of the Convention on the Abolition of the Death Penalty, under the initiative of this region, in order to promote the abolition of the death penalty throughout the world,” the Priority Positions of Turkmenistan at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly say.
