Turkmen athletes joined the 31st World Summer Universiade in Chengdu, China. This is the largest student competition, which is comparable to the Olympic Games. More than 5 000 students from 120 countries compete in 18 sports at the Universiade, the website "Turkmenistan: Golden Age" reports.
Turkmen athletes compete in four disciplines - judo, athletics, swimming and wushu. This is the fourth time that Turkmenistan has sent its representatives to the World Student Games. The country has been a member of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) since 2012 and is making great efforts to develop youth sports.
The Chengdu Universiade was opened at the stadium in the Dong'anhu Sports Park. The fire of the Summer Universiade was lit after a four-year break due to the pandemic. The games will last until August 8 and will be held at 49 sports arenas.
China hosts the Summer Universiade for the third time after Beijing in 2001 and Shenzhen in 2011. He also hosted the Winter Universiade in Harbin in 2009.
