Aspartame, a sweetener found in diet Coca-Cola, is being declared a carcinogen by the World Health Organization, reports Reuters.
In addition to Coca-Cola, aspartame is also used in Mars Extra gum and Snapple drinks. From July this year, this sweetener will join the list of carcinogens (substances that can provoke cancer) compiled by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Aspartame will be labeled "possible".
Over the course of many years of research, it has been confirmed that people who consume artificial sweeteners are diagnosed with cancer much more often than those who consume natural sugar. Tests on mice and rats only confirmed this hypothesis.
