The Republic of Korea will host the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships, reports the official website of the IOC.

The 2023 Asian Championship will be held May 3-13 in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do province.

Within the framework of the Asian Championship, 20 sets of awards in 10 weight categories among men and women will be played.

Previously, the Asian Weightlifting Championships were held in October 2022 in Bahrain. Then the first place in the unofficial medal standings was taken by the Chinese team (6 gold and 2 silver medals).

The last time Korea hosted this tournament in 2012, the tournament was held in the city of Pyeongtaek. In total, six Asian Championships have already taken place in Korea (1980, 1986, 1995, 2001, 2002 and 2012).

Traditionally, in recent years, the Asian Championships in terms of results are not inferior, but even surpass the European Championships. So, in 2019, many world records were set in Ningbo (PRC), including three in the combined event. The 2020 Asian Championship, which was held in Tashkent in April 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, also did not do without a large number of super results, including three records in the combined event for men in the weight categories up to 49 kg and up to 59 kg, as well as for women in weight over 87 kg. Chinese weightlifters excelled, who in recent years have dominated not only the Asian Championships, but also all major competitions.

The 2023 Asian Championship in Jinju was included in the list of licensed tournaments for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. A total of 120 weightlifters will take part in the Olympic Games in Paris. Each country will be able to field only six athletes - three each in the men's and women's teams.
