The Bhalswa landfill in northwest Delhi is growing by leaps and bounds. Despite the frightening size of the garbage heap (62 meters), people continue to dump waste, reports CNN.

This year alone, 14 fires broke out at the landfill, and this, not counting the foci that have been smoldering for months at the depth of the landfill. When burning, methane is released, and toxic liquids seep through the soil and enter the groundwater.

The 200 000 inhabitants of Bhalswa are forced to remain in an uninhabitable area, breathing poisonous air and bathing in contaminated water.

It is worth noting that Bhalswa is not the largest landfill in India. So, in the east of New Delhi is the Gazipur landfill. Its area is comparable to the area of 40 football fields, and it grows in height by ten meters a year.
