Turkmenistan approved the new Procedure and conditions for artificial termination of pregnancy. The document was published on the legal information portal of the Ministry of Adalat (Justice) of Turkmenistan.

The Rules of Procedure apply to women citizens of Turkmenistan, and also foreign citizens and stateless persons, who have been granted refugee or immigrant status.

In accordance with the Procedure, every woman, who has reached the age of majority, has the right to independently decide on the issue of abortion when the pregnancy is up to five weeks.

Artificial termination of pregnancy for social reasons and medical reasons is carried out at a gestational age of up to 22 weeks.

The issue of artificial termination of pregnancy at a later date for medical reasons is dedicated in institutions, that have received a license for medical activities by a special commission.

The list of social indications for artificial termination of pregnancy includes the presence of a court decision to deprive or restrict parental rights; pregnancy as a result of rape; stay of a woman or her husband in places of deprivation of liberty; the presence of a disability of group I in the husband, children, death of the husband during pregnancy or divorce.

Artificial abortion is carried out medically and surgically (vacuum aspiration, manual vacuum aspiration, small incision).

The method and form of induced abortion are chosen by a medical professional depending on the woman's health status and gestational age.
