Today, the State Migration Service hosted a solemn ceremony of presenting passports to persons accepted into the citizenship of Turkmenistan.
According to the Decree signed by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on September 19, 2657 people, permanently residing in our country and representatives of 21 nationalities, became citizens of Turkmenistan.
In addition, according to the Decree of the head of state, 406 persons who are citizens of foreign states were issued residence permits in Turkmenistan.
In the speeches made during the ceremony, deep gratitude was expressed to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for the enormous attention paid to solving the problems of stateless persons, for creating all conditions for their prosperous life.
Recall that Turkmenistan has joined international conventions on the problems of transportation and stateless persons, including the convention "On the status of the ecosystem" and the protocol to it, the UN conventions "On the status of stateless persons", "On the reduction of statelessness." Since 1995, the UN office of the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees has been operating in Turkmenistan. Since 2013, Turkmenistan has been a permanent member of the relocation organization.
Turkmenistan is also implementing the National Action Plan to eliminate statelessness until 2024, approved by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. In July 2020, a new Law "On Acts of Civil Status" came into force, which guarantees the registration of all children born on the territory of our country, regardless of the status of their parents.
Earlier, in December 2020, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a decree on the admission to the citizenship of Turkmenistan of 2580 persons who permanently resided in the territory of our country, but did not have any citizenship. Among them are representatives of 19 nationalities. Of this number of foreigners, about 60% were stateless women.
The authorities of Turkmenistan plan to eradicate statelessness by 2024.
