The final stage of the national competition on felting koshma was held in Ashgabat

Today, the final stage of the national competition for the production of the national felt carpet – koshma was held in the Central building of public organizations of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat. The competition is organized by the Central Council of the women's Union in cooperation with the national center of trade unions of Turkmenistan.

As reported by "Turkmenportal" organizers, the contest aims to preserve for posterity a unique fabrication technique, and ornaments of great national samples of felt, is a jewel of the Turkmen house, to pass on to younger generations masters the secrets of the traditional felt mats.

The event was attended by the winners of the velayat stages of the competition. The contestants in the first round had to perform work related to the preparation of felt (collecting, fluttering, combing, dyeing wool, etc.), as well as tell about the use of tools necessary for making koshma.

Next, the craftswomen had to demonstrate the art of decorating the koshma with an ornament that has its own characteristics in each region of the country. These are traditional koshma patterns such as “Ak tüýnük”, “Gyzyl tüýnük”, “Gözenek”, “Saýlan”, “Gülýaýdy”, “Sekiz goçak”, “Gelinbarmak”, “Gapyrga”, “Öküz oñurga”, “Gonjuk”, “Hindi goçak”, “Içýanagzy”, “Tazy guýruk”, “Saýlap”, “Barmak” and others.

In the traditions of national felting, songs, jokes, riddles, and fairy tales were an integral part of women's collective labor, which were composed and performed immediately during the production of koshma. Therefore, the third round of the competition included a story about the history of the art of felting, ancient legends, funny stories, performance of national songs and poems about the nightmare by participants.

As a result of the competition, the main prize went to participants from the city of Ashgabat, the 1st place was shared by participants from the Akhal and Balkan velayats, the 2nd place was awarded to craftsmen from the Mary and Lebap velayats, the 3rd place went to needlewomen from Dashoguz.

The winners of the contest were awarded certificates of appreciation from the Central Council of the women's Union of Turkmenistan and gifts from the National center of trade unions of Turkmenistan.
