President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on behalf of the people and Government of Turkmenistan, as well as on his own behalf, sent deep condolences to the President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron in connection with the death of ex-President of the French Republic Jacques Chirac, the press service of the head of state reports.

As noted in the message, Jacques Chirac, as a prominent politician and statesman, has done a great job for the welfare and happy life of the French Republic and its people.

The President of Turkmenistan conveyed words of sincere empathy and support at this difficult moment to the relatives and friends of the deceased, as well as to the friendly people of France.

Jacques Chirac died on 26 September at the age of 86, serving two terms, from 1995 to 2007, as President of France. It is the second longest presidential term in France's recent history. Only his predecessor, the socialist Francois Mitterrand, held the post longer than Chirac.

Jacques Chirac led France to use the single European currency. One of the main political reforms he carried out was the reduction of the presidential term from seven to five years and the abolition of compulsory military service. Before becoming President, Jacques Chirac had worked as Prime Minister and mayor of Paris. He served as mayor for a very long time-from 1977 to 1995.
