Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov reported on progress in developing partnership with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) at a government meeting, the State News Agency of Turkmenistan reports.
Turkmenistan has been a member of the IMO since August 26, 1993. The country has acceded to 14 of the organization's conventions and is working to bring its national legislation into compliance with their standards.
During the meeting, Meredov put forward a number of specific proposals. Specifically, to prepare for accession to the new IMO conventions, it is proposed to form an interdepartmental working group with representatives from relevant ministries and agencies. One of the group's priority tasks is to facilitate Turkmenistan's accession to the IMO Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic.
In addition, it was proposed to organize visits by IMO leadership to Turkmenistan in 2026 to discuss prospects for cooperation, as well as to hold thematic seminars and conferences with the participation of representatives of the organization.
