“Real Madrid” captain Federico Valverde called the victory over “Manchester City” in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 one of the best nights of his career.
"It was incredible; you can only dream of a night like this. I want to thank my teammates, who are so supportive and give me confidence. Of course, this is my best game in terms of goals! I really enjoyed it today; I haven't had a game like this in a long time. I'm happy, ecstatic, but most of all, I'm thrilled for the team's victory," the 27-year-old Uruguayan midfielder said, according to the UEFA website.
Speaking about the team's tactical developments, Valverde added: "The coach asked me to attack more, to run forward and attack dangerous areas. We focused especially on practicing long passes from goal. “City” like to press high, they like to play one-on-one, and this meant we could have space behind them that we could exploit."
“Real Madrid” beat “Manchester City” 3-0 at home in the first leg of the Round of 16. Valverde scored his first career hat-trick in the 20th, 27th, and 42nd minutes. “City” goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a penalty from Vinicius Junior in the 57th minute. The return leg will take place on March 17 in Manchester.
