The Icelandic government intends to submit a proposal to parliament for a referendum on August 29. Citizens will decide whether to resume negotiations on European Union membership, the cabinet press service reported.
Iceland previously applied to join the EU in 2009, amid a severe financial crisis. In 2013, negotiations were suspended due to the stabilization of the country's economic situation. By that time, Iceland had completed 11 of the 33 mandatory stages of integration.
In 2015, the country officially abandoned its status as a candidate for membership in the union. Thus, the upcoming referendum could usher in a new round of negotiations more than ten years after their actual conclusion.
